Bananas are usually harvested immature. To make them look pretty and yellow when they are sold, they are treated on their long journey with so-called ethene and nitrogen. In a shopping mall in Görlitz, a ripening gas of this kind may have injured several people on Wednesday.

Firemen brought in
In a shopping centre in Görlitz, 18 people complained of respiratory problems and teary eyes following. Five of them were taken to hospitals after the incident, on Wednesday night. The police said that the fire brigade was on site with a large squad, that cleared the shopping market.
