Germans are ready for exotic fruits

The papaya business

In Ghana, Swabian Helmut Lutz is growing papayas for the German market, and he is doing it quite successfully. The 58-year-old from Filderstadt near Stuttgart grows papayas and pineapples on 200 hectares of his Tropigha farm. According to his own information, he exports about 500 to 1000 tons per year to his home country.

Growing popularity of exotic fruits
The papayas of Helmut Lutz are transported to Germany by air freight. The day after the harvest, they arrive in Brussels or Luxembourg and are then brought to Filderstadt for distribution. Within 48 hours one can find the product in the supermarket.

Swabian style in Ghana
"In the past, a lot of things bothered me. Things like punctuality," says the 58-year-old, who once trained to be a car-maker. Today he knows that things do not work without it. "The cargo has to arrive on time." Therefore, he attaches great importance to good and punctual work and is willing to pay for it. "If you do well, you'll get good money."
