Peru: Cusco positions itself as an exporter of avocado for Europe, Asia and the US

In 2018, the district of Limatambo, in the region of Cusco, exported 1,258 tons of Hass avocado to the markets of Europe, Asia and the United States, i.e. 162 percent more than the 777 tons it exported in the 2017 campaign.

The avocado agricultural export activity from the Valley of Limatambo Cusco obtained favorable results for small producers, said the National Agrarian Health Service (Senasa), as agricultural exports from this area have gone from 50 tons in 2014, to 200 tons in 2015, and 280 tons during 2016 the campaign.

These results go hand in hand with the work carried out by Senasa, which is responsible for the certification of the Hass avocado production sites, the sealing of the vehicles that transport the fruit from Cusco to authorized packing facilities in Ica, and the export certification for international markets.

The phytosanitary certification of the production areas granted by the agricultural health authority guarantees that the export of this fruit complies with international regulations and the phytosanitary requirements required by each importing country, such as Spain, the Netherlands, Switzerland, China, Japan, the United States, and Canada.

Senasa also carries out phytosanitary surveillance of the Stenoma Catenifer plague, in order to safeguard the production of 400 hectares of avocado and to detect the presence or appearance of new pests or diseases that could harm and affect the production.

Limatambo is the most important Hass avocado producing district in the Cusco region, with 15 sectors and 225 producers, which are part of the Association of Fruit Producers of Palto del Valle, which allocates 70 percent of its production to the external market and 30 percent to the national and local market.
