Chiapas continues to be the leading producer of plantains in Mexico, as it produced 688,899.88 tons of this fruit in 2017, which accounts for 30 percent of the country's production, which stood at 2,229,519.34 tons
According to the Statistical Yearbook of Agricultural Production, Chiapas' production was sold for 167,387,490 pesos, which represents 16.7 percent of the national income, which stood at 6,965,812,510 pesos.
According to the data, the entity had 23,454.57 hectares devoted to plantains, and the municipality of Suchiate achieved the highest production, with 185,754.40 tons worth 400,329,450 pesos.
It was followed by a municipality that produced 95,119.32 tons worth 220,864,420 pesos, and by Mazatan, which produced 76,721.92 tons worth 195,113,820 pesos.
In total, 37 municipalities of the entity produce plantain; 13 are located in the Tapachula district, eight in the San Cristobal de las Casas district, eight in the Tuxtla Gutierrez district, five in the Pichucalco district, and three in the Comitan district.
At the national level, Chiapas leads production and is followed by the state of Tabasco, with 599,504.35 tons, Veracruz with 206,883.10 tons, Colima with 178,487.04 tons, and Jalisco with 173,502.65 tons.
