'Grassrooted' rescues tomatoes from the biogas plant

Swiss students prevent destruction of second-rate vegetables

Swiss students of the Grassrooted association have set themselves the goal of preventing the destruction of second-rate vegetables. Recently, they have been responsible for distributing spotty tomatoes in Zurich and Berne, among other things, instead of letting them end up in a biogas plant. The campaign is also a response to this year's surplus in Swiss vegetable gardening, in addition to a food-wasting measure.

In the near future, the opening of a market stand is planned directly at the Zurich train station where -presumably- until the winter time second-class vegetables will be sold. The regional products are sold directly to consumers at relatively low prices or slightly below the supermarket prices.

Storage and delivery
The founders are currently considering whether they want to go on selling fruit after that. Future expansion plans also include more appropriate vehicles and a storage room with an integrated production kitchen.
