China: Cold snap leads to high prices and low supply for Gala apples

The early-season apple purchase season approaches its end in the apple production areas of Shanxi. It took purchasing traders a long time to fill their trucks as the production volume significantly decreased this year. The price of Gala apples is also significantly higher than last year. Although the price fell slightly from 2.5 yuan [0.36 USD] per 0.5 kg when Gala apples entered the market to 2 yuan [0.29 USD] per 0.5 kg more recently, the price was still much higher this year than it was in previous years.

Recently harvested Gala apples

Apple orchards in China suffered from frost bite during extreme weather conditions earlier this year. The production volume decreased. Furthermore, some apple farmers were negligent in management, which resulted in smaller apples and increased insect pests. The proportion of high-quality apples was small this year. Although the price of Gala apples is nearly twice that of last year, the production volume is smaller and the product quality is lower.
