Increase of plum production in Argentina

The volume of plums arriving at the Central Market of Buenos Aires in the 2017-2018 season experienced a considerable growth, reaching 10,340 tonnes, which entailed an increase of 3,132 tonnes compared to the previous season; that is, a 43.4% growth.

The production season lasted from October 2017 to July 2018. The peak in terms of volume was reached in February, with 2,338.7 tonnes.

Regarding the varieties, the market reveals in its report that during the 2017/2018 campaign they identified thirty-four different ones. 28.5% of the total was placed in the category "without varietal identification." The ranking then continued with the varieties Larry Anne (21.1%), Angeleno (13.2%), D'Agen (12.7%) and BlackAmber (6.8%). These first 5 alone represented 81.8% of the total.

The province supplying the largest volume was Mendoza, with a contribution of 59.3%, followed by Río Negro, with 31.3%. The productive acreage devoted to plums in Mendoza is estimated at over 1,400 hectares.

Due to the weather, especially given the lack of spring frost and hail (which had been recorded in the previous season), Mendoza's annual plum production has recorded a notable increase. The lack of frosts and hail, especially in the north and east, which are the main producing areas, made it possible to reach normal volumes in most of the province.

In Mendoza, the varieties Santa Rosa, Linda Rosa, Larry Ann and Angeleno account for more than 60% of the plum acreage.
