More transparency in the German organic market

These include bakeries, butchers, farm shops, weekly marketers and mail order companies with organic offer. Bio sales, generated by these business types, can not be quantified exactly so far either.

According to estimates by industry experts, between ten and twelve percent of German bakeries also have a bio range. That would be around 1,100 to 1,300 bakeries that either mainly offer organic products or sell them alongside conventional products. At butchers it is likely to be between 300 and 400 businesses selling organic meat and sausage.

How many there are exactly and what turnover these companies generate in total through the sale of organic food, is the focus of the project under the leadership of Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft mbH (AMI) "More transparency in the German organic market - Improvement of the annual market estimate The project is funded by the Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food (BLE) as part of the federal program Organic Farming and other forms of sustainable agriculture (BÖLN).

The number of weekly markets has shrunk considerably in Germany in recent years. However, the number of weekly market players with organic products is increasing every year. Weekly markets in major cities, especially in well-established districts, show great potential. Weekly markets offering exclusively organic products have also established themselves in many cities.

Especially in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, there is "other shopping". A total of 600 organic bakeries, 240 butchers, 1,900 farm shops, 150 weekly market feeders and 270 mail-order companies were identified. Experts estimate that there will be far more shops, especially at bakeries and butchers. In particular, shops that also sell some organic products in addition to their conventional offer are often only to be found at second glance.

The largest shares of bakeries with organic content are located in Bavaria, with 208 companies, followed by Baden-Württemberg (114) and Lower Saxony (69). Bavaria is also ahead of butchers, farm shops and mail order companies. Niedersachsen only operates with weekly market feeders with 43 companies.

Of the approximately 3,200 shops that have been contacted, around 200 have provided information on their marketing and organic sales. At the farm shops, the feedback was clearly the best, followed by the mail-order business and the weekly marketers.
