Scarcity of Norwegian vegetables

Distributor Bama and cooperative Gartnerhallen fear for a scarcity of Norwegian potatoes, onions and carrots next spring. Together with Gartnerhallen and supermarket chains, Bama came up with various ways of solving the problems caused by the dry weather. For example, regarding size, lower requirements than normally could be implemented. “We’re hoping the Norwegians don’t mind helping out by buying Norwegian vegetables, even though they might look a bit different,” says Pia Gullbrandsen, manager of communications of Bama. Right now, the biggest problem appears to be that cold stores will be empty by March, two months earlier than normally.

The amount of potatoes and carrots will probably be about 80 per cent of the regular harvest, so that the scarcity will start in that area a bit sooner as well. If there are no Norwegian vegetables left to buy, import levies will be lowered so that importing from abroad will become easier.
