China: Carrot stocks depleted, price soars

Sannong Zhongguo reports that the carrot market has met with one problem after the other this year: the cold current in spring, continuous rainfall in summer, low prices, market polarization, and a strong rebound. What caused all these changes in the price of carrots this year? And how will the carrot market develop in the future?

The majority of carrots currently on the market comes from Shandong, and in particular from Laixi in Qingdao. Another small volume comes from Hebei. The overall market shape is as follows: the carrots from Shandong are at the end of their season, while Hebei carrots have not yet entered the market in large volumes. There is a temporary supply shortage. The price of carrots therefore increased rapidly last week.

The sales of Shandong carrots have not been great this year. The peak period for Shandong carrots that are stored during winter is in February and March, but that is also the period when fresh carrots from Fujian enter the market. The competition from fresh carrots made the sales of winter-stored Shandong carrots difficult, their price remained low. Right at that moment the cold current changed the market.

After the Shandong carrots retreat from the market, Hebei carrots will dominate until carrots from Inner Mongolia arrive. Hebei carrots were already on the market in large volumes last year around this time, but this year they are only just emerging. The temporary price increase is therefore not likely to last long.
