Turkey: Purple potato being developed in University

Nigde Omer Halisdemir University Agricultural Sciences and Technologies Faculty has announced that they have managed to develop a purple potato.

This particular variety of potato is now being registered as “Ilk Mor” by the Ministry of Agriculture. The potato has the same size, shape and taste as the normal potato with only difference being its color. The researchers were looking to expand the variety of potatoes and were inspired by researchers in other countries working on developing potatoes with different colors.

Other difference between this new variety of potato and other varieties is that the new variety is also much richer in terms of nutrients and antioxidants. The researchers added that the registration and trademark process is now completed and consumers could expect to see purple potatoes on shelves in 2 years.
