Turkey: Onion harvest has started in Suluova

Suluova, a town of Amasya, a city located in northern Turkey, is known for its onion production and the first harvest of the season has just started.

Suluova Agriculture Official, Tacettin Ozmen: “Last year onions were sold for 0.05 USD per kg which resulted in significant financial losses for the growers. This year we see a completely different picture. The prices started at 0. 35 USD level and have now stabilized between 0.18 – 0.23 USD.

The prices at retail were very high at one period as well. This year the production area for onions in Suluova was around 100 million square feet and our growers receive on average 4 tons per 10,000 square feet, so we can expect the production from this area to be around 40,000 tons this year. The productivity used to be much higher but due to limited amount of rains and some diseases the productivity went down from 7-8 tons per 10,000 square feet to 4 tons.
