A limited supply of South African citrus is ensuring prices remain at a reasonable level. "Demand is not too high, but even though there are delayed shipments, the market is holding fast", says Conrad Rijnhout of VerDi Import from the Netherlands. "Prices are at around the EUR15 level for larger sizes in open-top boxes. For those in telescope boxes, it is at EUR12-13. So, these are satisfactory."
"Current prices can be purely attributed to the supply. If there were large volumes available, the situation would be completely different", says Conrad. However, according to this importer, there has been no summer dip in citrus in recent years. "Supermarket orange juicers stimulate sales considerably. Even when it is hot, a glass of orange juice is always welcome."
He also categorises the lemon market as surprisingly good. "Everyone was afraid of an oversupply. There is, however, not too much available. This means prices are good again. Compared to last year, Spain is a demand market instead of a supplier. This has ensured smooth sales with good prices for Argentinian and South African lemons."
