Ukraine breaks record; over 40,000 tonnes of apples exported

Ukraine exported 40.9 thousand tonnes of apples in the 2017/18 marketing year, which is the highest figure over the previous five years. This data has been provided by UpenEU, a project of the Delegation of the European Union to Ukraine.

"The Ukrainian export of apples in the 2017/18 season was the highest in the past five years, 40.9 thousand tonnes of apples were shipped, which is 3.2 times more than in the 2016/17 MY. The export to the EU amounted to 11,632.5 tonnes. Among the largest importers are Austria, Hungary and Sweden," reads the report.

It is also noted that Ukraine exported 40,000 tonnes of berries to the EU last year.

The leaders of Ukraine’s berry exports were blueberries (44% of total exports of berries) and raspberries (29%), while the largest importing countries were the Netherlands, Austria and the United Kingdom.

The breaking of the record does not come as a surprise; back in February Andriy Yarmak, an economist, predicted Ukraine to export between 30,000 and 40,000 tonnes of apples this season.
