Philip van Geest: “Fewer clothes, less trade”

Combination of warm weather and holidays not great for fresh produce trade

‘Fewer clothes, less trade’ is an old saying in the fresh produce sector, and it can once again be applied this year. “Eating patterns change when it’s warm for a longer period. People don’t feel like cooking, while productions are often sky-high, which, for that matter, has consequences for productions weeks later,” says Philip van Geest of Van Geest International.

“In general, there’s less trade during the holiday period anyway. The combination of holidays and warm weather is great for people who are off work, but not for trade. Unless everything in Southern Europe and France withers so that there’s demand from the competition side of things. But so far there hasn’t been much fun, except on the iceberg lettuce market. Tomatoes are still continuing. Cucumbers are now at a good-paying level for the summer, but the rest is mediocre or just plain bad, and even dramatic,” Philip concludes.
