Joey Deen, Denimpex:

“Much demand to also offer organic garlic”

The first new harvest of Chinese garlic arrived a few weeks ago, and the first volumes in sales are now starting to do well. “During the first half of the season, prices in China were lower than last year, because the harvest was bigger. Prices will also start rising in China, because they now traditionally start moving everything into cold stores, and this costs more. Qualities and sizes are good this year,” says Joey Deen of Denimpex.

The importer from Amsterdam is expanding its garlic programme with organically grown garlic this year. “In recent years we received a lot of demand from our customers to also offer organic garlic, something we couldn’t do before because we personally didn’t have the right certificates. But last March we became SKAL-certified, and we got started. Danny flew to China and visited both the fields and the packing station to make sure we can guarantee our customers that it’s been organically grown,” Joey says.

“We do conventional garlic in all varieties and sizes, 10 kilos loose, 2x5 kilos, 10x1 hanging, 20x500 grammes, 40x250 grammes, 25x200 grammes and 20x200 grammes. For the first container of organic garlic, we’ve chosen a 10-kilogram packaging, but we don’t want to rule out small packaging in future,” the importer says. “We now have just about all garlic products in our programme, conventional, organic, solo and peeled. All products are naturally available year-round under out premium brand Dinosaurs.”
