World demand for Mexican chillis and peppers increases

Mexican peppers and chillis are ranked first and third in the world ranking of exports, which places them in the category of strategic crops with market potential in the 2017-2030 National Agricultural Plan of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Development Rural, Fishing and Food (Sagarpa).

"International demand for these products has increased in 20 countries in America, Asia, and Europe, as well as in other nations with which Mexico does not have free trade agreements, which makes our country one of the major international competitors."

According to the plan, chillis and peppers are important crops in the export offer, as the country exports 29.71 percent of its total production.

These Mexican crops account for a very important amount of the chilli and pepper imports made by countries, such as the United States, Canada, and Guatemala, among others.

Mexico is the biggest exporter of peppers worldwide. In 2017, it exported 150,304 tons worth 153.7 million dollars.

Mexico is also the third biggest exporter of chilli in the world, with shipments of 1,042,751 tons worth 984.7 million dollars.

According to Sagarpa, the chillis and peppers group is mainly constituted by the crops of chilli, habanero, bell, ancho, and anaheim chilli. Chilli and pepper crops have a great potential in the international market. Mexico produces 3.2 million tons of these products a year and, between 2003 and 2016, production had an average annual growth of 4.82 percent, which shows these products have a growing and stable participation in the national offer.

To increase sales opportunities, producers of these vegetables can participate in the third edition of the Mexico Food 2018 Food Show, which will take place from August 14 to 16 at the Citibanamex Center; a fair that will be attended by national and international buyers.
