Polish Fruit Grower's Union calls for strike against low prices

Polish summer fruit growers met on 18 June, 2018 to discuss the abnormally low prices in relation to production costs for raspberries, gooseberries, currants and cherries.

According to a statement on the Polish Fruit Growers Union (Związek Sadowników Rzeczpospolitej Polskiej) website, "Prices offered on the market are still unacceptable. The vast majority of the growers who attended the meeting, believe that we should stop or limit the amount of fruit harvest sold at this price. We feel that it is necessary for the Government (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) to take immediate action to mitigate the effects of the situation."

The participants of the meeting deem it necessary to take action in the following areas:
  1. More checks and supervision to control the quality and quantity of imported fruit from outside the EU.
  2. The Government and Parliamentarians will immediately work on clarifying the Act on the use of contractual superiority in agricultural and food products. The principle of a one-day contract is widely used, which in our opinion is inconsistent with the provisions of the Act. We demand a change to the subscription and the introduction of the deadline for concluding Agreements by the end of March of a given year, which will correspond to the requirements of the seasonal agreement.
  3. Employment in agriculture - the need to simplify the procedure.
  4. Urgent initiation of legislative work on the introduction of a mechanism for the abandonment of crops in given species (such mechanisms exist in Western European Union countries)
  5. Invoices for fruit trading should include an annotation regarding the country of origin.
  6. The introduction of tariffs and the entry price for fruit imported to the Polish market from outside the European Union.

A meeting has been planned between union representatives and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on 20 June, 2018 at 14:00.
