Sicilian producers get ready for table grape season

The Sicilian table grape season will start soon and producers are monitoring the weather as well as any diseases that may occur during setting and grape growth.

Greenhouses for table grapes cultivation

Table grape blossoming is already underway in some areas and the first fruit will become available in May.

Most producers in the Mazzarrone area (CT) are part of Consorzio di Tutela dell'uva di Mazzarrone, just like Azienda agricola Modica is.

Danilo Modica

"We run a family business that was established in 1989, when my grandfather decided to experiment with grapes. At the time, Matilde was a super-early variety, then my father started planting the Victoria variety, which has been our flagship product since 1997," explains Danilo Modica.

A small achievement
"Greenhouse table grape cultivation has now become very popular in Mazzarrone, but we are proud of growing it using sustainable techniques."

Azienda agricola Modica employs the integrated control method and fertilisation has a low environmental impact. Year after year, it focuses on reducing production costs, which have become practically unsustainable.

"We rationalise our interventions to obtain productions that respect the environment and consumers and to reduce production costs. We aim at growing fruit that is excellent to eat, nice to look at and with almost zero residues."

As of this year, the company will start producing Black Magic and Italia grapes to extend its production calendar.

Vineyards cover around 2.5 hectares. There are 1700 Victoria plants producing 40 tons per year.

"700 plants of Italia grapes should produce around 17 tons, while 400 plants of Black Magic should produce around 12 tons. Our fruit is destined to both local markets and traders."
