"Producers don't easily go for sustainable cultivation"

Increase in demand for organic avocados and tamarillos

Even though demand for organic avocados and tamarillos has been gradually increasing in recent years, few Peruvian companies have managed to convert 100% of their crops to organic production. For its part, Añawi Exports, with a specialised and experienced team, has managed to establish a relationship with local growers and converted plantations devoted to traditional exotic crops and avocados to organic production.

"Our mission is to supply the world with the delicious exotic fruits grown in Peru in a sustainable way. To achieve this, we make use of our lands, the climate and the producing communities in a sustainable manner, harvesting exclusively organic products. Moreover, we only use corrugated cardboard boxes in which our fruits fit perfectly; this way, we don't waste any materials or space," stated Alonso Salcedo, representative of Añawi Exports.

They have a constant production of fruits such as avocados, granadillas, passion fruit and tamarillos, but they are currently only exporting organic avocados. Products such as tamarillos and granadillas are being exported, but not on a large scale. "Organic avocados, given that they are a popular and fashionable fruit, are being imported in containers by Spain and we have seen a growth in demand. Furthermore, we have produce available almost all year round, but we are still in the development process and looking for customers, so our exports still have a lot of potential. Ready-to-eat tamarillos are starting to spark interest and we are confident that exports will grow in subsequent seasons," concludes the spokesperson of the Peruvian company.
