France : Limousin needs over 1,000 apple pickers

The Golden is the only French apple with a PDO and harvest has officially begun in the Limousin region. However, a shortage of manual labour is a recurring problem. At least 600 employees are needed in the Haute-Vienne, 400 in Dordogne and 350 in Correze, to harvest about 90,000 tons of fruit.

4,000 to 5,000 seasonal workers will harvest the apples over about 100 communes. Due to the problem finding workers to harvest the fruit, some producers allow consumers to pick their own fruit, which allows them lower prices.
