Cartomat presents new packaging solution at Potato Europe

''CartoPaper is the sustainable potato packaging for large packers''

CartoMat, based in Willich, will present CartoPaper, a pioneering packaging solution for potatoes, at the upcoming Potato Europe in Bockerode. The 100% recyclable and compostable paper monopack (certified) paper from the roll can be used on all vertical, conventional tubular bag machines. The high number of cycles per minute makes the CartoPaper an interesting solution for large packers, says spokeswoman Cornelia Grips of CartoMat Willich GmbH.

Capacity increase
Nowadays, the big packing companies work with the so-called Carry-Fresh-Lines, high-quality machines on which large quantities of potatoes are packed in sacks on a daily basis. Previous organic packaging solutions on average can do about 3 to 4 bags per minute. ''The CartoPaper significantly increases the capacity of the machines to up to 20 bags per minute. The packers can either optimize the conventional machines or, if necessary, invest in a new line," says Ms. Grips.

Visibility at the POS
In addition, the holes in the bags ensure good ventilation and an optimal microclimate inside the package. This way, the shelf life of the potatoes is improved, as is the visibility of the product. This is an important advantage at the POS (point-of-sale) or on the supermarket shelf, because consumers like to see what they buy and now transparency is guaranteed. "Our solution comes at just the right time," says Grips. 'The discounters intend to offer sustainable product packaging, but the product itself is still missing.''

Multiple units
Further advantages of CartoPaper is the good printability of the paper as well as the tape which protects the potatoes against dirt residues. Last but not least, the various packaging units are an important selling point, confirms Grips. ''We have sacks of 1, 1.5, 2 and 2.5 kg. in our range. We have also sold 500 grams already. Apart from potatoes, CartoPaper is also suitable for packing garlic, nuts and onions. After the promising results so far, we are investigating the possibilities for other fruits and vegetables. So that's the next step.''

Flexographic printing of all kinds
Since its founding in 1976, CartoMat Willich GmbH has specialized entirely in flexographic printing on films for the production of labels and banderols in various industries. In 2007, the company split into two independent companies: CartoMat Schiefbahn GmbH and CartoMat Willich GmbH. It derives its strength from the variety of production options and in-house development for individual customer requirements. For commercialization in the Benelux, the company works closely with Dutch supplier Van der Windt, based in the Westland business park.
