Turkey: Fig growers in Bursa want to penetrate Chinese markets

Black figs from Bursa, a city in northwestern Turkey are already being exported to many European and Far East countries but now the growers are attempting to enter the Chinese market.

Black figs from Bursa are claimed to be the highest quality of fig available worldwide due to their taste, size and long shelf life. Black figs were presented to the visiting delegation from China and garnered significant interest from them. Now the growers will set up the supply chain in accordance with the specifications required by Chinese customs, in issues such as quarantine periods, and then the trade will start.

The growers also note that the harvest and export times are extremely critical for a product like a fig and early harvest means that a lot people in export destinations are on holiday and thus not buying their products. So growers argue that they need to wait for the best time possible to reach customers in Europe.

The expected exports of black figs from Bursa is around 15,000 tons this season. The number is expected to increase exponentially next season if the trade lanes to China take off. The growers are also working on marketing campaigns aimed at China to strengthen their market entry position.
