Honduras: Banana export revenue increases by 1.5%

According to an official source, in the first quarter of 2018 Honduran banana exports amounted to 127.3 million dollras, i.e. 5.4 percent less than in the same period of 2017.

According to the Central Bank's report on Foreign Trade in General Merchandise, banana sales were 4.2 million dollars lower than the 271.8 million dollars achieved in the first quarter of 2017.

Between January and March, the Central American country exported 15,330 boxes of 18 kilos of bananas abroad, i.e. 10.2 percent less than the 17,062 boxes it shipped out in the first quarter of 2017.

The Central Bank noted that, despite a 10.2 percent decrease in the volume exported, revenues increased because there had been a 13 percent increase in prices.

The average price of a box of bananas stood at $18.53, i.e. 19.7 percent higher than in the same period of 2017, when it stood at $15.47, according to the Honduran agency.

The United States was the main destination for Honduran banana exports, as that market bought 6,565 boxes (95.5 percent) of the total fruit sold.

According to data from the Central Bank of the country, in 2017, Honduran bananas exports amounted to 522.7 million dollars.
