France: Consumers think supermarket strawberries and apricots lack taste

Blind tests carried out between June and July on almost 900 consumers in 25 departments revealed that only 32% of consumers were satisfied with the taste of strawberries and 31% by the apricots bought in supermarkets.

33% said that the French strawberries had "a nice taste" compared to 31% for Spanish strawberries, despite the French ones being double the price (€10.90/kg compared to €5.60/kg, strawberries from other countries- Belgium, Holland and Germany cost €9.20/kg).

Only 31% of apricot consumers said the taste was "correct" and 42% were "not satisfied". The average price for the French apricots was €4.40/kg whilst Spanish ones were €4.20/kg).

The CLCV carried out an online survey as well with almost 590 consumers. 68% said they were "barely or not at all satisfied" with the general perception of fruit sold in supermarkets. They mainly question the fruits maturity on arrival, then the taste, conservation, transport problems, storing in fridges and the use of phytosanitary products. The CLCV is asking retailers to show this information more clearly.
