Sebastián Bustamante, of Ecuaexotics, Ecuador:

Growing demand for pitahaya motivates boost in production

In recent years, the international demand for this exotic product of Ecuadorian origin has been growing constantly. Recently, producers across the country have gone from suffering low prices due to a high yield to a regularization of those prices, which they expect to remain stable throughout the year.

Despite having its own production, the Asian market has always been the main destination for the Ecuadorian pitahaya, although the US follows close behind. The number of tonnes exported to both markets is very similar, but while the United States imports both yellow and red pitahaya, Asia only receives the yellow variety.

Ecuaexotics is one of the companies devoted to pitahayas. It has its own production in the area of the Ecuadorian Coast. Sebastián Bustamante, its General Manager, says that "our fruits do not differ in terms of quality or size from those grown in the region of Palora, even though this is the main production area of Ecuadorian pitahaya (it even has a Designation of Origin). In our plantations, we have different production times than in Palora, which allows us to supply the international markets in a more consistent manner."
Bustamante also said that although they were finally unable to attend China Fruit Logística, Ecuaexotics will be present at the 2018 edition of Asia Fruit Logística in Hong Kong, "in which we hope to continue to position ourselves firmly in this market".

"The reason why we went to the China edition was because we believed that the opening of the Chinese market was going to take place in the first half of 2018, but it has not happened yet. We know that Agrocalidad is working hand-in-hand with its Chinese counterpart so that this opening will take place as soon as possible. As an export sector, we continue working together with government entities in order to open new international markets," concludes Sebastián Bustamante.
