“Our company started trading in the Asian market in 2014, starting with some trial containers. Now it has become a major market for us. We have grown significantly due to the large needs of bananas from this region. It’s definitely a market we are focusing on a lot to continue exploring it. Customers from China, Korea, and Japan are our main targets for the rest of 2018”, states Danilo Serrano from BabaBay, Ecuador.
The company started growing bananas more than 40 years ago. “The land was only small and formerly used for cocoa production. Nowadays, we have become a leading company in Ecuador within the banana industry”, says Danilo and he continues by quoting the founder of the company Mr. Walter Serrano, who used to say: ‘every decision we make in getting the bananas from our farms to our valued customers has consequences for the workers who grow them, for the quality of the fruit and the environment, this is why everyone should care about where their bananas have come from’.
“We take this very seriously and this is why our bananas are grown in a sustainable way, then harvest, shipped and ripened to meet the specific needs of the customers. We are so proud of our bananas, that we launched our very own brand BanaBay. It’s is a symbol of our effort on producing the very best bananas in the world. Being a banana grower is our passion and we have dedicated our lives to it.”
Currently, the brand BabaBay gets exported to more than 14 countries all over the world. “Since, 2013 we diversified the product range of the company by adding pineapples, plantains and baby bananas to our fruit portfolio. All of these products are still a niche market in Asia, but we foresee a big increase in the short-term as consumers are getting more familiar with the products.”
Danilo concludes that for the year 2019 they are planning to increase their own banana production significantly trough expanding their production area. “This will help us to serve more efficiently to our valued customers. We simply believe that the best fruits can only come from the best farms, where the workers are passionate about growing them, and we simply love it!”
