China: Rapid growth of fruit imports in summer

Families spend a larger proportion of their budget on fruit during the summer. Data from the Department of Agriculture shows that fruit consumption significantly increased from May onward, and the proportion of imported fruit also increased. The majority of imported fruits comes from Southeast Asia, which is one of the most important fruit producing areas in the world because of its unique climate. In addition, Southeast Asia enjoyed abundant harvests this year and the purchase prices are relatively low.

Imported fruits

The majority of imported fruits consist of fruits that are not produced in China or only produced domestically in small volumes, such as durian. Durian is a classical, tropical fruit. There is no possibility in China to produce durian on an industrial scale. The Chinese market therefore completely depends on imports. There are, of course, also fruits that are imported for their unique flavor.

Although prices in the domestic fruit market have recently been rather weak, trade volumes in the imported fruit market and the domestic fruit market remain strong. The reason for this is high product quality. In addition, the price of imported fruits is relatively low, so that their market position is still slightly better than domestic fruit.
