Marcel van Rooijen, Torres Tropical Fresh:

“Mango stores emptying quickly now”

Traditionally, demand for mangoes drops in summer, but supply is now also becoming much scarcer. “It could become a bit tense at the end of the month regarding availability,” says Marcel van Rooijen of Torres Tropical Fresh. “The supply from Brazil is now running out, Senegal is now shipping their final mangoes, and the Mexican season is also almost over. Israel has been less present on the European market in recent years. All in all, supply is quickly dwindling because of this.”

“Prices dropped because there’s a lot of small fruit on the market. Quality of the mangoes is regular, but there’s no great quality,” the importer says. “Brazil is now between seasons, so volumes are dropping drastically. There are hardly any alternatives to fibreless mangoes. Prices are now, depending on size and variety, at a level between 4.50 and 5 euro, but I expect these will rise to 5.50 to 6 euro next week.”

According to Marcel, demand for mangoes always drops in summer. “Plenty of summer fruit is available for low prices then, and buyers in Eastern Europe have plenty of local productions.” Changes in preferences for variety between the various countries can hardly be noticed, he says. “Tommy Atkins is mostly sent to Eastern Europe, Palmer is in demand in Germany and Southern Europe, and Western Europe mostly prefers Kent and good-quality Keith.”
