BLE market report week 31/2018

Supply of iceberg lettuce barely enough to cover demand

The demand for iceberg lettuce was large and the German supply that was supplemented with Dutch product proved insufficient. Some Spanish parties entered in Berlin. The prices fluctuated, initially they shot up clearly but they later dropped back down.

The trade in lettuce went rather quietly. The Belgian parties became cheaper, partly due to a declining interest. In the German parties, the size of good quality parties declined, making the good parties generally more expensive. The assortment of colourful lettuce had declined due to the summer weather. The prices generally rose. The sales of Belgian lamb's lettuce went too slowly, making it cheaper. Endive played a subordinate role on the market.

Apples
The product range of the new season is noticeably broader. As availability increased so strongly, there was a noticeable sales pressure. The prices generally fell accordingly.

Pears
The European supply is gaining significance. The total supply increased slightly, but met with a not too great interest. It became increasingly difficult to keep prices at a constant level. In the end, prices fell in most cases.

Grapes
The demand was generally insufficient to get rid of enough supply. Even in the direction of the weekend, sales did not really improve. As a result, the prices had to be adjusted downwards several times.

Strawberries
The supply of strawberries declined on the one hand and demand on the other hand also fell further and further. The prices varied greatly, depending on product characteristics and purchase intensity.

Apricots
The availability of French and Turkish apricots, as well as the supply of additional Spanish and Italian parties, clearly declined. The quality also deteriorated considerably. The flesh became increasingly soft and milky, which slowed the sales.

Cherries
The cherry season is now over. The supply declined enormously towards the end of the season. Cherries of an excellent quality were often more expensive, but they did not dare to increase the prices too much. This was because sales had clearly slowed down and as a result surpluses threatened to arise.

Peaches and nectarines
The supply was somewhat reduced. The demand had improved, but still too small to guarantee a smooth sale. This is why traders lowered their prices.

Plums
The generous availability created a noticeable sales pressure. In addition, the plums quickly softened, which greatly curbed the sales. The prices fell as a result, sometimes even to a low point.

Lemons
The market was dominated by lemons from Argentina. Thesupply was too scarce. With a constant demand, prices remained stable at least.

Bananas
In general there was a weak demand. The traders usually managed to adjust the supply here sufficiently. The prices therefore remained as usual at a constant, but low level.

Cauliflower
On the whole, the high temperatures had an extremely negative impact on sales. It became increasingly difficult to accommodate the available supply. The prices eventually fell in all cases.

Lettuce
The trade in lettuce went rather quietly. The Belgian parties became cheaper because of reduced quality and reduced demand. With regard to the German supply, the size of good quality parties declined, making them generally more expensive.

Cucumbers
The domestic supply determined the sale of cucumbers. At the beginning of the week the prices remained fairly stable, but shortly afterwards the prices slowly increased.

Tomatoes
The situation remained tense: huge quantities came on the market. Although the demand was very good, the supply surplus did not seem to get any smaller. The prices had to be continuously reduced.

Peppers
Due to the considerable supply, the prices of red and yellow peppers in most cases were low. This did not apply to green peppers, as they came on the market in small quantities. They were actually more expensive.
