Peru: Asparagus, the third most exported product from the Jose Chavez airport

The Foreign Trade Company of Peru (ComexPeru) said that exports of metals, agro-industrial products, and textiles stood out within the portfolio of products that the country exported by air in 2017.

Fresh asparagus exports ranked as the third most exported agricultural product through the Jorge Chavez airport, with a value of US $309 million in 2017 (i.e. 3.4% of the total). Mango exports ranked 12th and exports of this product through this route amounted to US $30 million in the same year (0.3% of the total).

According to ComexPeru, export of agricultural products by air still has a great potential. They also said that the products that lead the ranking of total exports, such as grapes, avocados, and blueberries, didn't do so well in air shipments.

According to ComexPeru, from 2010 to 2017, exports of grapes grew by 19.7% annually (US $654 million in 2017); avocados by an annual 31.8% (US $588 million in 2017); and blueberries by 280% annually (US $371 million in 2017). "Despite this, only asparagus, mangoes, and a blueberry variety have managed to stand out among air shipments."

They also stated that the volume of agricultural exports through the port of Callao from 2010 to 2017 had increased at a rate of 7.4% per year, from 862 million tons in 2010 to 1.422 billion tons in 2017. Meanwhile, the volume exported through the Jorge Chavez airport only increased by an average of 0.1% per year in the same period.

Thus, asparagus air exports went from accounting for 84.6% of all asparagus exports in 2012 to 75.5% in 2017 (almost 10 percentage points less).
