Turkey: Melon harvest has started

A very special variety of melon, which is also called the “ground banana” is being harvested in Yozgat. The melon, known as Aydincik Bagributun, is right now in the process of being trademarked.

The growers noted that the taste of the fruit is somewhere between a melon and a banana and it is grown in a shape of 10 distinct slices. The melon is in high demand from big local markets such as Istanbul and Ankara and the growers are hoping to earn more from their production once the trademark process is finalized. Also a local university is working hard to determine the morphological and genetic characteristics of the melon and use these traits to register for geographical signature. The price of this melon is around 0.35 USD per kg.
