China: Production and sales conflict has intensified

We often see cases where fruit is high-yield but not sold at a good price and produce is left to rot in the ground. However, consumers are complaining that the fruits are getting more and more expensive and they can't afford them.

In recent years, China's production has developed rapidly and the country has now become the world's largest fruit producer. The conflict between production and sales has changed dramatically: not only has the price of fruit risen and fallen rapidly, but also some fruits are hard to sell while others are in high demand. In the meantime, the quality, storage, processing, export and distribution channels of fruit are not compatible with the trend, which seriously affects the sustainable development of fruit industry production. Why is there such a contradiction between production and sales?

In fact, this is a serial phenomenon. Blind development, limited social purchasing power, and low product quality may lead to conflicts between production and sales. From the production side, the problems can be roughly divided into the following aspects:

1. The quality of the fruit is unstable and the emphasis is on quantity. This results in a low standard in appearance and quality;

2. There is a lack of variation in fruit varieties and most of the fruits are seasonal crops. They either have zero production or the production is excessive. When large quantities of seasonal fruit flock to the market, oversupply becomes a problem in a short period of time;

3. The production methods are relatively backward, and the technical level and economic benefits are not high. Most of the fruits are scattered and managed by households. There are few modern orchards that are centrally managed.

4. The post-harvest processing of fruits is weak, and the capabilities of commercial processing, storage and preservation, and deep processing are insufficient;

5. Production supervision is poor and market information is not accurate. Blind promotion of fruit varieties often occurs. Fruit trees are cut and the planted again, which greatly reduces the enthusiasm of fruit farmers.

From the sales side, many of the middlemen are fruit shop managers and supermarket suppliers. Their situation is equally difficult. Although they can purchase a large number of fruits from farmers with a low wholesale price, due to the standardized management of the fruit market, only fixed stalls or shops can be rented to sell fruits. The rent and management fees are expensive, the stalls are concentrated, and the competition is fierce. They can only increase the price of fruits to subsidize high expenditures.

Consumers are helpless in the face of rising fruit prices. Fruits that could be bought in the past for a few yuan now go for ten times that price. They can't afford to consume, so they can only reduce purchases. Every purchase is carefully selected and they only buy a small amount. The good ones are bought, and the remaining low-level fruit is left to rot. In the face of such a situation, the fruit seller can only reduce the amount of fruit wholesale, while the fruits of the farmers can not be sold and only left to rot in the ground.
