China: Greenhouse grapes unable to compete with open-field

Seasonal summer fruit enters the market as the weather grows hot. Apart from watermelons, grapes also receive a particularly warm welcome on the market. The price of open-field grapes is relatively high this year, while greenhouse grapes are relatively common. Zhuochuang Information data analyst He Tan said that greenhouse grapes entered the market early, which means that there was less overlap with the period in which open-field grapes entered the market. However, since the surface area devoted to greenhouse grape vineyards has grown in the last few years, the overall supply exceeded demand. The price of greenhouse grapes therefore dropped in comparison with previous years. Several vineyard owners have decided to plant different crops, or delay their sales until the price is higher.

Many vineyard owners who delayed the sales of their grapes have run into open-field grapes in the market. Since open-field grapes receive more sunlight, their sugar content is higher. The overall quality of open-field grapes is also quite good this year. As a result, open-field grapes sell better this year than greenhouse grapes.

He Tan further said that open-field grapes maintained a great price throughout July and thus far in August. Although the price of greenhouse grapes is mediocre, it is not expected to significantly decrease. The reason for this prediction is that the product quality of greenhouse grapes and open-field grapes is quite good this year, and heavy rainfall harmed the production volume and product quality of watermelons, the main competition of grapes in the summer market.
