Brazilian papaya shipments to US in strong position
Supplies of Brazilian papaya into the United States are at good levels right now. Coupled with the strong demand, this is providing Brazilian papaya suppliers with a positive outlook. Weather conditions have been good for the most part and prices are at comfortable levels.
"We grow papayas all year round in Brazil," said Edwin Gonzales of Florida-based Crown Global Corporation, part of the Union of Growers of Brazilian Papaya. "The weather has been favorable for the past few months. There have been some rainy days, but this is normal for this time of year and the rain has not affected fruit quality. Supplies of papaya are overall very good at the moment."
"Demand for Brazilian papaya in the US is strong, and along with the steady supply, this is resulting in a good market," he continued. "Prices though are not too high and are remaining moderate which is great news for everyone."
Several varieties shipped
The Union of Growers of Brazilian Papaya (UGBP) grow the Solo papaya which is available to the US market. The company has been exporting papaya to various European as well as North American markets for several decades. They were also the first Brazilian company to receive the PIF Certificate for papaya production. And according to Gonzalez, demand continues to grow.
"Demand for Brazilian papaya is very strong and many people ask about them," he shared. "We ship the papaya by air and offer a number of different varieties under our Red Flesh brand, which is the Solo variety papaya. Other names for Solo include Strawberry Papaya as well as Golden Papaya and they are considered one of the sweetest varieties."
The company said it had also used Amazon as a trial to explore the E-Commerce side. Gonzalez noted that it was a good experience and the company are now looking at several options to find which one will be the best fit. "We wanted to see how the product will do in the Amazon market and overall it was a good experience," he said. "We have currently paused the program to think which new and innovative ideas will make the E-commerce side of the Business a success."
