Wim Isings, Explotaciones Fincas Iberia:

“Export winter season will start earlier than in previous years”

Although the Dutch growing season isn’t over yet, envious looks are already being cast at the import season. It’s dry in Southern Europe as well. This has surprising consequences according to Wim Isings of Explotaciones Fincas Iberia. “Growers of Frutas & Hortalizas Santomera in Murcia (fresh herbs, lettuce and vegetables) expect that export for the coming winter season will start earlier than in previous years,” he says.

Wim inquired with a great number of growers in Murcia, Almeria and Albacete. “In general, there isn’t a well-founded reason for panic or major shifts in production yet. Laminas, a major cauliflower and broccoli grower from Albacete, wanted to expand, but decided not to do so because of the high price of water. His production for the coming season will now stay the same as last season.”

Growers make great use of the available amounts of water. “People are naturally required to use the water sparsely. After all, only half of what was provided – and required – is still available. But the final effect on production is still acceptable. Moreover, expectations are positive because people count on more rain in coming weeks,” Wim concludes.
