China: Fall in grape prices

An announcement from the Hefei City Price Bureau Surveillance Office shows that grapes currently enter the market in Hefei City in large volumes. The price is slightly lower than it was in the same period last year. The Price Bureau predicts that the price will not be much higher this year. This is because sufficient sunshine, abundant rain, and excellent fruit development have produced an abundant harvest this year. Many grape varieties currently enter the Zhougudui Agricultural Wholesale Market in Hefei in large volumes. The average daily trade volume is close to 400 tons. However, as the trade volume increases, the price continues to fall.

At this stage, the price of Jufeng grapes is relatively low at only 2.5 yuan [0.37 USD] per 0.5 kg. The price dropped by nearly 50% in one month. The price of Xiahei grapes is relatively high. The wholesale price is now stable at 4.5-5 yuan [0.66-0.73 USD] per 0.5 kg, but dropped nearly 5 yuan [0.73 USD] in the last month. Grapes are notoriously difficult to keep in storage. If they are not sold within three days, then they are unlikely to be sold at all. This certainly puts pressure on sales, which is why the Association of Wholesale Merchants takes the initiative for sales promotions. The price is expected to fall even further as the supply volume grows.
