2018/2019 Campaign

Peru plans to export up to 45 million boxes of grapes

Carlos Zamorano Macchiavello, the general manager of the Association of Producers of Table Grapes of Peru (Provid), stated that Peru will export between 43 million and 45 million boxes of table grapes in the 2018/2019 campaign, which will begin at the end of this month. Each box stores 8.2 kilos of the aforementioned fruit.

In the previous campaign (2017/2018), the country shipped 33 million boxes of grapes, Zamorano stated.

He said exports would increase in this campaign due to the recovery of the northern fields, which had been affected by the effects of the coastal El NiƱo last year.

"The rebound of production in Piura will be strong, the fields and the weather are good. The climate in Ica is also good and production continues to grow," he said.

In the current 2018/2019 campaign Ica is expected to export 21 million boxes and Piura is expected to ship a similar volume. In the previous campaign Ica exported 19 million boxes and Piura only 9 million; while in the 2016/2017 campaign Ica exported 17 million boxes and Piura shipped out 15 million boxes.

New markets
The general manager of Provid said that the markets of Vietnam and Malaysia had been reopened for the Peruvian table grape for the current campaign 2018/2019. The latter was closed for 3 years.

He also said that personnel of the National Agrarian Health Service (Senasa) had visited Indonesia last week to improve the safety conditions for shipments to that market. This country will remain open for table grapes from Peru.

In October Peru will receive a visit from the phytosanitary authority of Indonesia, he added. This delegation will come to inspect the fields and packing plants and solve some safety issues that are pending but that are expected to end in October.
