Chile will import Peruvian blueberries

Chile will import Peruvian blueberries, thanks to the phytosanitary certification process carried out by the National Agrarian Health Service (SENASA), stated the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (Minagri).

"It is already a reality. Peru will begin exporting fresh blueberries to Chile in the current harvest season," said the head of Senasa, Roberto Acosta Galvez, who is currently verifying in situ that the agricultural food safety and health measures taken by agricultural exporters in the northern region of Peru comply with all standards.

Public and private entities, ProArandanos and Senasa, are ending the certification processes of the blueberry production and packing sites. After this, they will request a technical visit of a team from Chile's Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG), which will verify the phytosanitary conditions of the packing facilities.

The president of TALSA, Rafael Quevedo, welcomed Senasa's efforts to strengthen agricultural exports, as they will benefit rural families. "Blueberries are no longer an exotic export product for Peru. The private sector couldn't have achieved this goal without the support of the State," he said.

He also said this progress in the north of the country began with the Chavimochic Special Project (an irrigation system for La Libertad), and the opening of international markets by Senasa, which helped increase production possibilities and product variety for the benefit of farmers.

"Peru is destined to become an extraordinary player in the world's agricultural industry," Quevedo said.
