Proseal upgrades Berry Gardens tray sealers ahead of growing season

Tray sealing specialist Proseal has demonstrated its commitment to existing customers by carrying out extensive upgrades on the Proseal machines of numerous fresh produce growers within the Berry Gardens Growers group. The upgrades, which are delivering significantly enhanced energy efficiency, were carried out in the tight gap between UK growing seasons.

In total, Proseal has installed 34 Eseal delivery systems and 11 ProMotion tray infeed systems to coincide with scheduled maintenance at the sites, which are situated around the UK, from Kent to Aberdeenshire.

The main reason for the Eseal upgrades was to reduce the power-consumption of the companies’ tray sealers. With their new electrical delivery systems, the machines use 75% less kW per hour and emit 2.52kg less C02 per hour compared to when they were fitted with their pneumatic predecessors – making them significantly more cost-effective and environmentally friendly.

Eseal technology from Proseal also delivers improved seal quality, due to a force-increase of up to 200%; increased machine productivity as a result of reduced seal time; and improved MAP processes by ensuring accurate gas flush positioning.

To implement all the upgrades before the start of the UK growing season, Proseal first had to manufacture 34 complete E-seal modular units, before installing them at each of the sites. Each installation was minimised owing to the modular nature of the Eseal system.

“Given the timescale and the need to keep providing a quality service to our other customers, this was a big challenge,” explains Tony Burgess, Head of Sales and Control Systems at Proseal. “However, we pride ourselves on our commitment to existing customers, and always make sure that new technology and developments are made available to them in the form of upgrades – especially where huge energy savings and performance enhancements are possible.”

In the same period, Proseal also installed its ProMotion continuous motion tray infeed system in 11 tray sealing machines across Berry Gardens companies. This upgrade is a challenging one as it requires an entire control system upgrade, all of which was done on time and with minimal disruption at the factories.

ProMotion technology from Proseal has the potential to increase the speed of a tray sealer by 25%, while creating calm machine operations, which offers a smoother, more stable journey to the machine for delicate products such as soft fruits.

“We have a longstanding relationship with Proseal and have purchased many of their machines throughout our packhouses due to their second-to-none service and the fact they always ensure farms get the help they need during the busy growing season,” says David McCormack, Head of Packaging at Berry Gardens Group.

“With the new upgrades, the machines are not only faster and more energy efficient – they also perform better in terms of seal quality and product protection. This is yet another example of the excellent service that Proseal have always provided us with.”

Headquartered in Maidstone, Kent, Berry Gardens Growers is a grower-owned cooperative made up of fresh produce manufacturers from around the UK.
