Air transport takes Sicilian fruit to new destinations

Air transport could become strategic for premium fresh produce from south-eastern Sicily. The market is increasingly interested in high-quality healthy products, so Sicily could and must play a leading role, especially if Italy wants to compete with other Mediterranean countries.

The sector can now count on a new opportunity, as there is a carrier that can reach any destination at a good cost. FreshPlaza talked about it with Rossano De Luca, Cargo Country Manager Italy for FlyDubai.

"On 13th June 2018, FlyDubai started operating daily direct flights from Catania to Dubai, with connecting flights to over 100 final destinations. We can also offer destinations as apart of the Emirates network at special tariffs. Our Boeing 737/8 Max air crafts can transport up to 3,000 kg/18 m3, therefore the weekly capacity is of approximately 21,000 kg/126 m3."

Interview with Rossano De Luca

"We aim at working with international carriers and exporters. We have already had contacts and signed contracts with leading international exporters on the market and also met with local associations and producers."

Lower tariffs
"Our prices are 20% lower than the market average, so we are more competitive. It's a great opportunity for the Sicilian sector. We've already transported considerable loads to Dubai and we're open to work with all Sicilian productions, as FlyDubai doesn't only fly to Dubai, but can reach the Pakistan, Indian or African markets."

"We don't reach China directly but, as FlyDubai is somewhat related to Emirates, we can offer destinations part of its network. Should a carrier need to reach Singapore, Hong Kong or Melbourne, we can meet its needs."

The fresh produce market is a priority for our company, so we've implemented a campaign aimed at Sicilian exporters to promote our work. It has already let to contracts with leading operators."
