Mexico: Pineapple basin project will be modified

The Pineapple basin project will be modified after some 400 producers demanded that the Collection Centers aren't established in the municipality of Felipe Carrillo Puerto, where the production of this tropical fruit isn't so strong. Marcelo Carreon Mundo, the Sub Secretary of Rural Development of the Sedarpe, decided to modify the project and reorganize it due to the persistent disagreements.

In mid-May, some 400 pineapple producers took over the facilities of the Secretariat of Agricultural Development, Rural and Fisheries (Sedarpe), because, according to them, in the first stage the government handed out 17 million pesos to people who were not true producers of pineapple or tropical products. They also complained because in 2017 the government approved the disbursement of 30 million pesos for field workers in the second stage of the project, but that money hasn't been disbursed. According to Marcelo Carreon, the money will soon be disbursed.

It is worth mentioning that representatives of the 43 cooperatives denounced that there had been irregularities so that no more resources were authorized and that Pedro Perez Diaz, the head of Sedarpe, was directly responsible for handing over the resources to his relatives. As a result, they stated, the producers of the short route that initially were not taken into account will be taken into account in the next delivery.
