Lower onion volumes in Tropea

"The Cipolla di Tropea IGP season is in full swing, although the weather partly damaged production. Our onions are increasingly demanded as consumers know about their healthy properties," explains Giuseppe Laria (in the photo), president of Consorzio di Tutela Cipolla di Tropea IGP-Indicazione Geografica Protetta.

"The heavy rains made harvesting difficult, so we're expecting 30% less produce. The market will be affected during the second half of the season, but prices will pick up."

"Entire productions were washed away by the April floods. Around 40 hectares were lost, mainly in the area of Campora San Giovanni, Falerna and the coast."

"Considering that it's a niche market, it's difficult to source the product although prices are average at the moment. The sea breeze is beneficial to our bulbs, but the risk posed by the strength of water must be kept in mind."

"We're working with other 7 producers and a trader to create better conditions. Agreements will become official next week."
