Mexico: Pressure on US apples increases

The 20 percent tariffs applied to US apples imported to Mexico affect producers across the border, who through the Apple Association have warned that their situation is getting worse.

The retaliation that Mexico put into effect against the taxes imposed by President Donald Trump has put pressure on farmers in five states of the American Union, especially in California, Texas, and North Carolina.

Meanwhile, the president of the Apple Product System, Elier Garcia, said there was a decrease in imports from the US, but that there was no shortage of apples in the market or abnormal situations.

Garcia said that this created more opportunities for Mexican agricultural producers. He denied that the imposition of tariffs by Mexico on apples would translate into a price increase, since there was nothing out of the ordinary.

The price of a kilo of apples stands at around 39 Mexican pesos in some areas of the Aztec country. Prices haven't show an upward trend, as they have remained more or less in the same range as before, depending on the market, city, and state.

He said there could be slight increases in prices because some apples were refrigerated in warehouses, so the production costs would be reflected in the price paid by the final consumers.

Garcia said that Mexico regularly imports 10,000 to 12,000 boxes of apples a year, but that there had been a reduction in imports since June. However, he added, there are still no detailed figures.
