June at the Lusia fresh produce market

The first half of June was characterised by lots of thunderstorms that made temperatures drop. This is turn caused fluctuations in product quantities and quotations.

The weather was sunnier and with good temperatures during the second part of the month, with increasing quotations thanks to the livelier demand.

As for the single products, the lower volumes of green garlic led to a slight increase in prices. This month it will be replaced by larger volumes of dry garlic.

Red potatoes

Bianca di Milano salad, chard, red beetroot and puntarella prices were rather good, also thanks to the smaller volumes available and good demand.

Carrots met both producer and trader expectations. Supply was good although slightly lower than in June 2017. Prices increased thanks to the livelier demand.

There was good interest for cauliflowers and cabbages, so prices were also good.

The increase in cucumber volumes inevitably led to a drop in prices. Grades and quality were always good.

The start of the green bean campaign was positive, characterised by a discrete increase in quantities and good sales prices. Quality was excellent especially for the produce harvested by hand.

Fennel volumes were abundant but, thanks to the lively demand and good quality, prices remained high and definitely positive for producers.

Lettuce did well thanks to the low quantities available. Gentile (in the photo above), butterhead and Roman lettuce did better. Endive prices were also higher than in June 2017, while commercialised volumes were stable. Volumes dropped towards the end of the month and prices skyrocketed. PGI Cappuccia and Gentile lettuces also did well with increasing sales and quotations even in difficult moments.

Round aubergines

The aubergine season didn't start very well as prices dropped due to the abundant quantities. The three types - oblong, round and purple - did not raise particular interest. Demand only livened up for the round varieties towards the end of the month.

Tomato productions and quotations dropped for all varieties and demand was rather slow. Only the price of round and beefsteak tomatoes increased.

Leek supply dropped - the old low-quality production is ending, while the new one has excellent characteristics. Demand seems to be focusing on the latter. Prices hover between 30-40 eurocents/kg for the old produce and €1.50-1.40/kg for the new one.

Parsley was affected by the weather, so volumes dropped and quotations increased.

Radicchio volumes were also low, so prices skyrocketed, especially for the round variety. Demand was also good for celery, so the quotations of both white and green types increased.

Volumes of spinach and courgettes were stable, so prices were average.

The good grades and excellent quality of apples, smooth melons and nectarines led to higher prices.
