Radish category continues exploring alternate ways to deliver

Radish is seeing a slightly better picture than it did at this time last year.

“We currently have a normal supply of radish for this time of year and plan to continue with consistent volume throughout the season,” says Paul Miller of Duda Farm Fresh Foods in Oviedo, Fl. “Last year’s supply was constricted due to some weather instances. But this year’s supply is normal.”

Miller adds that Duda’s supply of radish currently hails from Michigan but the company ships from two other locations as well (Florida and California). Along with some small regional deals, competing product also comes from Michigan as well as Ohio, Oregon and Canada.

Variation in demand
Demand, which largely comes from retailers and some wholesalers as well for Duda, is changing in a sense. “Consumers want more variety from the radish category,” says Miller. “We’ve seen the consumer transition to fresh cut “grab and go” options such as the Ready Radishes coins and mini sticks,” Miller says. “Duda’s fresh cut items have been so successful that we have had to strategically work with customers on timing new product rollouts so we’re ready for demand spikes.”

Miller also adds that Duda’s working with its New Products team to review consumer trends such as these and says foreseeing what the consumer wants even as far ahead as five years from now can be a challenge.

As for pricing, all of this even supply and demand means pricing is staying steady. “We expect to continue harvesting steady volume while searching for new outlets worldwide,” says Miller.
