Besides being cheaper, Italian seeds also provide variety

Italian seeds allow Alexandria Foods to export peppers for lower prices

It’s an unusual occurrence; Italian traders are selling Italian pepper seeds to Egyptian growers on Egyptian soil, rather than exporting the seeds from Italy. It provides a lot of opportunities for Alexandria Foods Industry, a growing company based in Egypt. They are specialized in artichokes and peppers, however the Italian seeds provide a cheap alternative to the native seeds the company uses.

“Not only do the Italians give us a great price on the seeds, it also brings a lot of variety to our available products. The season starts in October, maybe November and we’ll be producing as much as we can from our local village.” says Ahmed Mansour, Managing Director for Alexandria Foods. “The products are then exported back to Italy, for instance Milan. But we also export our products to France, Spain and Greece.”

Alexandria Foods is hoping to expand a lot during the upcoming season, by growing different types of fruits and vegetables like strawberries and some organic vegetables. For the strawberries the company plans to import the seeds from Italy. There is a lot of ambition to export to more countries in Europe and to export in bigger quantities.
