Colombia: The US is a constant and growing market for avocados

The difference in Hass avocado exports between the periods of 2002-2009 and 2010-2017 is abysmal.

In the first period the country achieved 137,000 dollars in revenue, while in the second period it achieved 103,3 million dollars, i.e. 75,301 percent more.

The outlook for domestic producers became more interesting in August of last year, when the US allowed the entry of this product into their market. Due to this avocado boom, the 75 employees of the Pacific Fruits International plant, located in Palmira, Valle del Cauca, have had to work hard, dedicating three quarters of their days to pack 5-6 containers a day, which they export to the US.

"The US is a constant market and its growing," said Rodolfo Ahumada, the commercial director of this export company, who also highlighted the dynamism of the US market. According to Ahumada, the US is the biggest consumer and importer of avocado in the world. As such, he said, "what we've achieved so far and what we'll achieve in the future is very important."

The nearly 300 producers from 14 different departments of the country that work with the Pacific Fruits International company are happy with their arrival in the United States and await the opportunities that will arise from the opening of Argentina, Hong Kong, and Dubai.

"We carried out our first export, 17 tons (a little less than a container) to Santa Paula, California, a couple of months ago. Our goal is to ship 40 containers from now until the end of 2018," Ahumada said.

The next step is Japan. In March, Colombia presented the export protocol to that country. According to expectations, the export volume of this product will be doubled this year.
