Shipt, a leading online marketplace, announced it will begin same-day delivery of an assortment of groceries and household essentials with Roche Bros. Supermarkets in Boston. Beginning July 12, Shipt delivery from Roche Bros. and Sudbury Farms will be available to Boston metro area residents. “Shipt is expanding its delivery offering with Roche Bros. Supermarkets in Massachusetts to give our members a convenient way to access their favorite products from a beloved and unique local retailer,” said Bill Smith, founder and chief executive officer, Shipt. “Through our app, our members have access to everything they need, when they need it, right at their fingertips.”

Retail sales in B.C. strong, despite dips across Canada
Retail sales remain strong in British Columbia despite large declines across the rest of the country. British Columbia was one of three provinces to have its retail sales grow more than 1% in April from March. B.C.’s retail growth was in the face of large-scale declines of 1.2% across the rest of the country. The negative retail numbers across the rest of the country were unexpected. The consensus projections were that sales would remain unchanged in April. B.C. had the third highest growth in retail sales of 1.1% behind Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia, which each beat 2%. Growth in retail sales occurred predominantly outside the city of Vancouver. Within the city, retail sales grew a meagre 0.2% in April from March.

CAN: Sobeys parent reports Q4 profit up, raises dividend
Empire Co. Ltd. raised its dividend as it reported a better-than-expected fourth-quarter profit. The parent company of Sobeys will now pay a quarterly dividend of 11 cents per share, up from 10.5 cents. The increase came as Empire said it earned $71.0mln or 26 cents per share for the 13 weeks ended May 5 compared with a profit of $29.5mln or 11 cents per share a year earlier. Sales in the quarter totalled $5.89bln, up from nearly $5.80bln in the same quarter last year.

US: Publix buys Safeway's stores in Florida
Publix Super Markets Inc. is purchasing Safeway's three remaining stores in Florida from Boise, Idaho-based Albertsons Cos. Located in Altamonte Springs, Largo and Oakland Park, the three locations will continue operating under the Safeway banner until early September. However, the Safeway pharmacies will close before the main store closings, though Publix posted will be displayed in the pharmacies to advise customers once their prescriptions have transferred to the Publix Pharmacy. All locations are anticipated to reopen under the Publix banner within the fourth quarter of this year.

Germany's retail sales fall for first time in 7 months
Germany's retail sales decreased for the first time in seven months in May, figures from Destatis showed. Retail sales decreased unexpectedly by 1.6% annually in May after climbing 1% in April. Sales were forecast to climb 1.9%. This was the first decrease since last October and the biggest fall since February 2017, when sales slid 1.7%. Data showed that food sales climbed 0.7%, while non-food sales decreased 3%.

UK: Tesco trials 'shop and go' app in till-free store
Tesco is trialling new “shop and go” technology that allows customers to scan and pay for their groceries on their smartphone and then walk out of the store without visiting a till. The retailer is using staff at its Welwyn Garden City headquarters as guinea pigs for the service in a purpose-built Express convenience store on the site. Tesco has installed the app, Scan Pay Go, on the mobiles of 100 staff who are able to use it to scan barcodes and then pay for their shopping.

South Korea: Emart launches new discount format
South Korea's largest hypermarket retailer, Emart, has opened a new discount banner at the Convention and Exhibition Center in Seoul. Emart's new discount banner, Pierrot Shopping, operates 2,513 sq m retail space and carries approx. 40,000 items ranging from food and grocery, electronic appliances to other general merchandise goods. The new store aims to draw more customers to physical stores, following the rise of online shopping. Emart faces intense competition in South Korea, but continues to respond by developing new formats and testing new technology in-store. The retailer plans to open two more Pierro Shopping outlets in Seoul this year.

Eurocash has filed an application with the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK) for an approval for concentration in connection with a planned acquisition of shares in Partner Sp. z o.o., based in Lipno. The company operates 26 Lewiatan-branded stores. The seller is Asteria Holding Sp. z o.o., one of whose shareholders is Wojciech Kruszewski, a longtime CEO of Lewiatan Holding S.A.

Russia: X5 Retail's Pyaterochka opens 1,500th store in Moscow region
X5 Retail Group N.V, a leading Russian food retailer, announces that Pyaterochka has opened its 1,500th store in the Moscow region. The landmark event took place in Lenino, Istra city district. With a more-than 500 sq m sales floor, the new store offers over 3,500 SKUs, and has a special emphasis on fruit, vegetables and fresh category goods (meat, dairy, fish, etc.). Collectively, these account for more than one third of the store's product offering. Domestically-produced goods account for 90% of the assortment, with roughly 20% sourced from local manufacturers, including the Ruzsky Bread Factory and the Klinsky Bread-Baking Complex. Last year, X5 worked with over 250 suppliers located in the Moscow region.

Switzerland: leading retailer cuts 290 jobs
Migros, the biggest retailer in Switzerland, has announced it will cut 290 full-time jobs over the next three years following a drop in profit. The federation of cooperatives said in a statement it was making itself fit for the future and hoped to save 120mln francs through a restructuring of operations. The majority of jobs will be lost through natural wastage and early retirement and reduced working hours but around 70 redundancies are expected, the retail giant said. The Migros cooperative currently employs 2,700 workers. The business magazine Handelszeitung said most of the job cuts would hit marketing and IT departments.

Tesco and Carrefour are announcing their intention to enter into a long-term, strategic alliance. The Alliance will cover the strategic relationship with global suppliers, the joint purchasing of own brand products and goods not for resale. It will be governed by a three-year operational framework. The Alliance will enable both companies to improve the quality and choice of products available to their customers, at even lower prices thereby enhancing their competitiveness. This agreement will also allow both companies to strengthen their relationships with their suppliers and create significant opportunities for those suppliers. Each company will continue to work with supplier partners at a local and national level.
