Enrique Pedros, Früchte Pedros:

Germany: 'Oversupply of Egyptian oranges’

While the typical summer fruits such as apricots, cherries and melons are currently having their peak season, citrus fruits are currently more in the background. Nonetheless, large quantities of oranges arrive weekly in the German wholesale trade, as well as in the warehouse of Früchte Pedros GmbH, based in Nuremberg. Both Spanish navel oranges for fresh consumption and juice oranges of the Valencia variety are currently finding their way to the local wholesale market area. But the price differences between the two origins are huge, says CEO Enrique Pedros.

At this time of year the wholesaler normally also buys oranges from South Africa; Due to the large quantities availability, management is currently refraining from doing so. “This has to do with the oversupply of Egyptian oranges,” says Mr. Pedros on the citrus fruits he’ll be marketing until approximately week 30 KW. “The prices of the Egyptian products is currently very low, at around €8 per 15kg. The Spanish oranges, on the other hand, are around €15 per 15kg.”

'Turnaround phase'
In the clementine sector, wholesale is currently undergoing a phase of upheaval as Spain's supply has recently come to an end. Next week the first shipments from South Africa and Uruguay are expected. So the firm will start selling these a little later, on the one hand, because they want to finish all their Spanish stocks and on the other hand, because the quality of the first lots from overseas tends to be a bit less in terms of colouring and taste. On the other hand, fresh lemons are available throughout the year with no supply gap in the range: “We currently source our main variety, Verna, from Spain, complemented by varieties from Argentina and South Africa.”

Among other things, the citrus market is comparatively quiet due to the presence of stone fruits

Because of the great demand for stone fruits, the citrus market is currently relatively quiet. Only from the end of September to the beginning of October the peak season will start up again, says Pedros, going on his many years of experience. According to Pedros, there will be more to choose from and, for example, grapefruits will be added to their range as well. “The same goes for exotics: The mango is one of our main items during the season, especially those from Brazil. This is certainly a typical winter product that we will only start marketing in large quantities again from October.”

Third generation
The Früchte Pedros GmbH is one of the longest-established on the Nünberger wholesale market, opening an independent stall in 1959. In its present form as a GmbH, the company has existed since 1982. Since Enrique Pedros Greysinger retired in 1996, the company is now working with a third generation under the direction of managing directors Enrique Pedros Frank and Rafael Pedros Frank. The main focus of the Executive Board is on weekly market traders, specialist retailers and catering in a wide area. Depending on the season, the GmbH offers a full range of regional and Spanish fruits and vegetables as well as overseas products.
